Hermann von Galen (born March 21, 1623 , † December 8, 1674 ) was a Roman Catholic clergyman, canon in Münster and official in Lüdinghausen.

Life

Origin and family

Hermann von Galen came from the Protestant noble family von Galen , one of the oldest and most important in Westphalia . He was the son from the first marriage of Gert Valke von Galen zu Ermelinghof (* 1590 † December 25, 1642) and his wife Anna Margaretha von Hugenpoth (* October 5, 1598 † October 31, 1636) and had nine siblings and four step-siblings from the father's second marriage to Anna Margaretha von Frydach (*? † after 1640). Hermann's sister Mechthild (1616–1691) was married to Johann von der Recke zu Steinfurt. Their son Johann Dietrich was official in Werne.

Act

Hermann was sworn up in the Protestant diocese of Bremen in 1637, where he was emancipated as canon on July 23, 1640. In 1654 he was re-Catholicized under the influence of his relative the Prince-Bishop of Munster Christoph Bernhard von Galen . With the receipt of the tonsure on September 12, 1661, Hermann was prepared for a spiritual Catholic life. He studied in Paris and received the minor orders on September 21, 1663 . The next day he became a sub-deacon . After the presentation on April 5, 1662, after the revolt on May 3 of that year, it came into the possession of a cathedral priest in Münster . He was appointed official of Lüdinghausen on October 12, 1669.
