Johann Matthias von Galen zu Assen (* May 8, 1674 at Assen Castle ; † February 3, 1716 in Lippborg ) was canon in the Prince Diocese of Münster .

Life

Origin and family

Johann Matthias von Galen came from the ancient Westphalian  noble family  von Galen , which is one of the most important in the Duchy of Münster and from which numerous important and well-known personalities have emerged. In the 16th century it partially sympathized with the Reformation, but later became Catholic again. Johann Matthias grew up as the son of  Johann Heinrich von Galen  (November 15, 1609 - September 17, 1694, hereditary chamberlain, imperial baron and official coroner in Vechta, brother of  Prince-Bishop Christoph Bernhard von Galen ) and his wife Anna Elisabeth von der Recke zu Steinfurt with his half-siblings Margaretha Anna (1644–1700, ∞ Hermann Matthias von Velen), Katharina Elisabeth (1646–1711, ∞ Dietrich von Büren), Christoph Bernhard (1646–1647),  Franz Wilhelm  and Dietrich Christian (1650–1658) and with his sisters Theodora (* 1654, ∞ Arnold Johann von Vittinghoff), Brigitta Clara (* 1656, ∞  Christoph Heidenreich Droste zu Vischering ), Anna Maria (1658–1697, ∞ Johann Adolph von Raesfeldt), Francellina Christina (* 1660, ∞ Wilhelm Heinrich von Korff ), Sophia Elisabeth (1664–1688, ∞ Stephan Theodor von Neuhoff), Johanna Mechthild (1667–1694), Thyka Christina (* 1669), Regina Theresa (1671–1712, ∞ Franz Sigismund von Elverfeldt) and his brothers   Christoph HeinrichFerdinand Bened ikt , Heinrich Ludwig  and  Karl Anton .

Career and work

In December 1692 Johann Matthias received a cathedral praise in Osnabrück after the cathedral chapter had nominated him for this. On February 26, 1699, the Turnar gave the prebend in Münster for the deceased Raban Wilhelm von Schilder. He graduated from Rome and became a subdeacon . Johann Matthias married a woman from Raesfeldt zu Twente in 1706 , whose first name is unknown. On June 28 of this year abandoned it on the stipend in favor of the Paderborn prince bishop . A year later he resigned in Osnabrück in favor of Friedrich Christian Droste zu Vischering.
