Uncarina leandrii is a species of plant in the genus Uncarina in the sesame family (Pedaliaceae).

description

Uncarina leandrii grows as a small tree with a short trunk and several, unbranched branches and is up to 2.5 meters high. The clearly lobed leaves are 16 centimeters wide and also long. In each case, a central, terminal large flap is formed and 4 smaller ones on the sides, which are less lobed. The green upper side of the leaf is covered with a few simple hairs, which occasionally have an indistinct head. There are also a few mucous glands with a square head. Due to the small number of mucous glands with a short stalk and the long and short simple hairs formed along the veins, the underside of the leaf appears gray-green.

The inflorescence consists of cymes with 2 to 8 individual flowers that do not form large clusters. The flower tube of the golden yellow flowers is 4.5 to 7 centimeters long.

The side of the fruit, which is strongly compressed, is egg-shaped when viewed from the side and has a long, broad, pointed or blunt beak . Two lateral wings with thorn-like edges are formed on the fruits, which are 7 centimeters long and 4 centimeters wide and only have hooked spikes. The hooked spines are six or seven in a row, are up to 20 millimeters long and do not go beyond the beak. The base of the spines is broadened and fused into a ridge. No false partitions are formed. The inverted heart-shaped seeds are 8 millimeters long and 7 millimeters wide. The wings are 1.5 millimeters in size.

Distribution and systematics

Uncarina leandrii is endemic to central and southern Madagascar , in the northeast of the Toliara province and in the southwest of the Fianarantsoa province on laterite with quartz sand.

The species was first described in 1962 by Jean-Henri Humbert . The following subspecies are distinguished:

  • Uncarina leandrii var. Leandrii
  • Uncarina leandrii var. Rechbergeri Lavranos
