Friedrich Mathias Count von Galen

Friedrich Mathias Graf von Galen (born May 20, 1865 in Münster ; † November 10, 1918 in Dinklage ) was a landowner and a member of the German Reichstag .

Life

Galen was the eldest son of Ferdinand Heribert von Galen and attended the Stella Matutina Jesuit grammar school in Feldkirch and the Antonianum grammar school in Vechta . From 1885 on he studied theology at the Universities of Lille , Bonn , Rome and Munster . At first he renounced his birthright , but after a lengthy illness he broke off his studies and took over the administration of his father's property. Since 1894 he was married to Paula geb. Freiin von Wendt (1873–1959), daughter of the Reichstag member Carl Hubert von Wendt (1832–1903). The couple in turn had a daughter who became a religious sister, which is why the inheritance later fell to the nephew Christoph Bernhard Graf von Galen . Friedrich Mathias von Galen was Knight of Honor of the Order of Malta and President of the Catholic Congress in Mainz in 1911 .

Galen was a member of the Westphalian provincial parliament since 1899, the district council and district committee of the Beckum district . From 1907 to 1918 he was a member of the German Reichstag for the constituency of Oldenburg 3 ( Vechta , Delmenhorst , Cloppenburg ) and the German Center Party . From 1912 he was also a member of the Prussian manor house . He died of the Spanish flu on November 10, 1918 .
