Heinrich August Hussmann (also Hussmann ; born July 15, 1899 in Staßfurt ; † July 3, 1982 in Cologne ) was a German art professor, heraldist , typographer and applied graphic artist .

Life

From 1915 to 1919 Hussmann did an apprenticeship as a draftsman in a glass painter's workshop. From 1919 to 1924 he studied painting at the State Academy for Book Trade and Graphics in Leipzig . From 1924 to 1925 he was artistic director of the large bookbindery EA Enders in Leipzig, from 1925 to 1927 artistic director in the design department of the Bohemian glass industry in Karlsbad. He then worked as a freelance painter, (book) graphic artist and set designer and costume designer and student of Fernand Léger in Paris.

In 1928 he was appointed professor of applied graphics by Richard Riemerschmid at the Cologne factory school and stayed there until his retirement in 1965. Among his students were Eduard Prüssen and Anton Wolff .

In the period from 1933 to 1945 he was a sought-after heraldist and book designer. He summarized his very disciplined teaching practice in the books “About the Book” (1968), “About German Wappenkunst” (1973) and “About Writing” (1977).

These books give a rough impression of the artistic style of the graphic artist Hussmann, who created well over a thousand designs for book covers and bindings.
