Rudolf Schniewindt (born December 25, 1875 at Gut Berentrop , Neuenrade , † July 16, 1954 in Marburg ) was a German officer , most recently general of the infantry in World War II .

Life

family

Rudolf Schniewindt was born on the family-owned Berentrop estate as the son of Albert Ludwig Leopold Schniewindt (1833–1897). In 1912 he married a granddaughter of Heinrich Xaver Sieger , Elfriede Sieger (1887–1979), whose father was the lieutenant general and knight of the order Pour le Mérite , Ludwig Sieger (1857–1952). Rudolf's brother was Ludwig Theodor Wilhelm Schniewindt (1868–1938), who on May 21, 1918 was also awarded the order Pour le Mérite as a major.

Military career

Schniewindt occurred on 29 October 1892 as a cadet in the third Magdeburg Infantry Regiment. 66 of the Prussian army and was there on May 14, 1894 on the second lieutenant promoted. From October 1897 to the end of September 1901 he served as a battalion adjutant and was sent to the Prussian War Academy the following year for further training . There he was promoted to first lieutenant in September 1903 . In July 1905 Schniewindt returned to the troop service to his main regiment and was assigned to the General Staff on April 1, 1906 . With the promotion to captain on March 23, 1908 he was aggregated to the General Staff. In the following year he was assigned to the General Staff of the Metz Governorate, and was transferred there on March 26, 1909. From 1911 to January 1913 Schniewindt was company commander in the 3rd Lower Alsatian Infantry Regiment No. 138 , was then assigned to the Prussian War Ministry and transferred here on October 1, 1913. There he worked as a mobilization officer in the army department.

On August 19, 1914, Schniewindt was promoted to major and from November 1, 1914, he was assigned to the headquarters . In 1918 he was appointed Chief of the General Staff of the VII Reserve Corps .

On October 1, 1920, he was promoted to lieutenant colonel and employed in the Reichswehr Ministry as a department head in the formation of the 100,000-man army. Schniewindt then returned to the troop service and joined the staff of the 12th Infantry Regiment in Halberstadt . He was promoted to colonel on September 1, 1921, and as such he commanded this regiment from February 1, 1923 to January 31, 1926. He was reassigned to the Reichswehr Ministry and appointed inspector of the inspection of the intelligence forces in 1926. On July 1, 1926, he was promoted to major general and on March 1, 1928 to lieutenant general . As such, Schniewindt was from April 1 to September 30, 1929 commander of the 3rd division in Berlin and then in the same function in Stettin with the 2nd division . He gave the command from September 30, 1931, the ceremony was character as a general of infantry retired from active service.

With the mobilization of the Second World War , Schniewindt was reactivated and on August 26, 1939, he was appointed Commanding General of the Deputy General Command IX. Army corps appointed in Kassel . Thus Schniewindt also became the commander of the military district command IX. based in Kassel . On September 1, 1940, he received the patent for his rank. He gave up his command on May 1, 1942 and was transferred to the Führerreserve until he was finally retired from the Wehrmacht on June 30, 1942.

post war period

Schniewindt succeeded his father-in-law as a member of the supervisory board of Rudolph Koepp & Co., Chemische Fabrik A.-G. in Oestrich .
