The Amt Balve existed between the 14th and the beginning of the 19th century as part of the Duchy of Westphalia . Under Prussian rule , the office of Balve continued until the municipal reform in 1975. After that, it was partly in the towns of Balve , Neuenrade, Menden, Hemer and Sundern.

The Balve office can be traced back to the 14th century and, in addition to the town of Balve, also consisted of several parishes and peasant communities .

In 1802 the office of Balve and the Duchy of Westphalia were taken over by Hessen-Darmstadt. After an administrative reform in 1811, the city of Balve, the city of Allendorf, the freedom Hagen, the freedom Affeln , the freedom Langscheid and the districts of Garbeck, Küntrop, Altenaffeln , Langenholthausen, Beckum, Volkringhausen, Hövel, Holzen vorm Lür, Stockum and Amecke belonged to the area of the Balve Office. In 1817, one year after the transition to Prussia, the office was assigned to the Arnsberg district . In addition, the communities Asbeck, Blintrop, Eisborn and Mellen were added, while Allendorf, Hagen and Langscheid were detached. In 1969 Küntrop was assigned to the city of Neuenrade. The Balve office remained in the Arnsberg district until it was dissolved in 1975. In 1961 the office had an area of ​​117.5 km² and 10,616 inhabitants.

The coat of arms is taken from an old court seal of the Balve office from 1550. Saint Peter is the patron saint of the Archdiocese of Cologne and the half black cross stands for the former affiliation to the Electoral Cologne Duchy of Westphalia. The half eagle and the colors blue-silver remind us that Balve belonged to the county of Arnsberg until 1368. The official approval took place on March 5th, 1957.
