Giorgio Mondini (born July 19, 1980 in Vandœuvres ) is a Swiss automobile racing driver .

Career

Mondini began his motorsport career at the age of 21 at Jenzer Motorsport in the Formula Renault 2000 Eurocup . In his first year he reached 26th place, the following year he finished 17th. He also competed in various Formula Renault championships and won a Swiss Formula Renault race.

In 2003 Mondini moved to EuroInternational in the Formula Renault V6 Eurocup . With a fourth place as the best result, he finished seventh in the overall ranking. He also took part in the winter series of the North American Formula Renault for EuroInternational and finished the championship in fifth place. In 2004 he won this series with three individual victories and a total of eight podium finishes.

In 2005 Mondini switched to Formula Renault 3.5 , which replaced the World Series by Nissan and the Formula Renault V6 Eurocup. He took part in several race weekends for EuroInternational and Carlin Motorsport and finished the season in 24th place overall. In the middle of the 2005 season, Mondini switched to the GP2 series and replaced Ryan Sharp at David Price Racing . With a 13th place as the best result, he finished 26th overall with no points at the end of the season. At the end of the year he completed his first Formula 1 test for Renault .

In 2006 Mondini started for the Swiss A1 Grand Prix team. He took part in the last two race weekends and replaced his compatriot Neel Jani . In 2006 he was also hired as a Formula 1 test driver for the MF1 Racing team , and was the third driver in Friday practice in nine of the 18 Formula 1 races of the season. In 2007 he took part in the final Formula Renault 3.5 race weekend for EuroInternational and finished the season in 40th place. Mondini also took part in a race in the FIA GT Championship in 2007 and won a race in the Spanish GT Championship.

After a one-year break, Mondini returned to international motorsport in 2009. For Team Kolles , he started three races in the LMP1 class of the Le Mans Series . He also took part in the 24 Hours of Le Mans for Kolles , finishing in ninth place.

In February 2011, Mondini took part in Formula 1 test drives for HRT .
