Peter Scharmann (born February 26, 1950 in Klagenfurt ) celebrated numerous successes in German and European motorsport in the 1970s in the Formula V (1300cc), Formula Super V (1600cc) and later also in Formula 3 and Formula 2 classes .

Motorsport career and biography

After graduating from the HTL Klagenfurt, the trained mechanical engineer worked from 1970 to 1973, first as a designer and later as a chassis engineer at Porsche in Stuttgart, including under Ferdinand Piëch , who later became CEO of Volkswagen AG .

Just one year after entering motorsport in 1972, Peter Scharmann won the Central European Championship in Formula Vee in the 1973 season in his first self-made cockpit. For the Austrian, who drove with a German license, the experience from his work at Porsche proved to be helpful in setting up his own racing cars.

Further successes included the German runner-up in Formula Super Vee in 1974 and 1976. The triumphant advance culminated in winning the German Formula 3 championship in 1977, the first year of the then 27-year-old driver in this class. Scharmann, whose main sponsor was the Warsteiner beer brand, won the championship in a ToJ-F302 racing car from the Obermoser Jörg team . The model was only introduced in the year Scharmann won the Formula 3 Championship and this season it was used with both Toyota and BMW engines. The future Formula 1 driver Keke Rosberg was also one of those drivers who drove vehicles from Jörg Obermoser's ToJ workshop.

Peter Scharmann ended his career in motorsport in 1979 as a driver in Formula 2 and then devoted himself to his professional career and his family. In 1982 he moved back to his hometown in Carinthia and has been working at HOBAS ever since , becoming its managing director in 2000.

After a long break, Scharmann came into contact with motorsport again through karting and in his free time is on the road with his own kart on tracks in Austria. He is married and has two grown children.
