The Belgian could not score any points and was replaced by eventual champion Jamie Green three race weekends before the end . In the overall standings, he took 28th place.
In 2004 Heylen switched to the international Formula 3000 championship , which was held as part of the Formula 1 supporting program , to the Belgian team Astromega and became a team mate of his compatriot Nico Verdonck . Although he scored a point and achieved better results than Verdonck, after four races he was replaced by Olivier Tielemans . At the end of the season he finished 16th overall. He also started this year in the German Formula 3 Cup , in which he won six races and took third place in the championship. In 2005 Heylen found no cockpit in formula racing and he switched to the Renault Mégane Eurocup , which he won with six victories.
In 2006 Heylen moved to America in the Champ Car series . Starting for Dale Coyne Racing , he finished 14th overall at the end of the season. His best result was fifth. After 2007 had initially found no cockpit, he moved to the fourth round of the Champ Car series for Conquest Racing . With a second place as the best result, Heylen finished 16th in the championship at the end of the season. Heylen had to hand over his cockpit to Nelson Philippe for the last two races of the season because his team had financial difficulties.
After the Champ Car Series merged with the IndyCar Series in 2008 and Heylen had not received a cockpit, he only contested four races in various GT racing series. For 2009 he originally wanted to compete in the Indy Lights and had signed a contract with Team E , but neither the team nor Heylen took part in a championship race. In the 2010 season , however, this constellation came about for the opening race, which the Belgian finished in second place. There were no further missions. At the end of the season he finished 24th overall.
