The 1000 km race on the Hungaroring 2010 , also 1000 km of Hungaroring , took place on August 22nd on the Hungaroring and was the fourth round of the Le Mans Series of this year.

The race

The 1000 km race was the first long-distance race on the Hungaroring, the Hungarian race track near Mogyoród . Since 1986 has been on this track Hungarian Grand Prix of Formula 1 is discharged. The race took place in August, on a date originally intended for the 1000 km race at the Nürburgring . The traditional race at the Nürburgring , which was held on the Nordschleife for many years , was dropped from the racing calendar after the organizer failed to finance it. The sports car race at Hungaroring was designed as a night race. Of the expected six hours of driving time, the last two took place in the dark.

During training it quickly became apparent that the route with many bends and only one long straight did not favor the powerful LMP1 prototypes . The favored Oreca - Peugeot 908 HDi FAP only reached fourth place in qualifying. The fastest in training was Danny Watts in an HPD ARX-01c , a less powerful but also lighter LMP2 car. With a time of 1: 32.431 minutes (average 170.631 km / h) it was 0.4 seconds faster than the best-placed LMP1; the Rebellion-Racing- Lola B10 / 60, driven by Andrea Belicchi .

Belicchi took the lead after the start and held it until lap 33, then he was overtaken by Olivier Panis in the Peugeot. With the race set-up, the Peugeot was much better on the track, which allowed Panis and his teammates Stéphane Sarrazin and Nicolas Lapierre to gain a stable lead up to the 129th lap. At that time, Belicchi's Lola had failed due to a technical defect and the second Rebellion Lola had fallen far behind. Lapierre pits in the leading Peugeot on lap 130. After just one lap, Lapierre headed for the pits again. This time the car was pushed into the garage for a 40-minute repair. The resulting transmission problems could not be resolved, so that after several attempts to get the car ready to race again, the Peugeot stayed in the pits until the last lap. Then Sarrazin drove a slow lap to get into the ranking. Due to the LMP1 disaster, an LMP2 car won the overall ranking. Pole setter Danny Watts won with teammates Nick Leventis and Jonny Kane in the HPD ARX-01c.
