Danny van Poppel (* 26. July 1993 in Moergestel ) is a Dutch cyclist who on the road and cross-country race is active.
Athletic career
In 2009 Danny van Poppel was the Dutch junior champion in cyclocross (cyclo-cross racing), and he was also junior runner-up in the individual time trial on the road. In 2010 he won both the overall standings and a stage of the Driedaagse van Axel junior stage race . In 2011 van Poppel was again Dutch champion in cyclocross, this time in the junior class. In addition, as in the previous year, he was able to win part of the Driedaagse van Axel .
For the 2012 season, van Poppel joined the Rabobank Continental Team . At the beginning of the year he finished second in the opening time trial, one stage and the overall ranking of the Istrian Spring Trophy . In the further course of the year he achieved two stage wins in the Thuringia Tour and a success in the team time trial of the tour. The following year he started for the Vacansoleil-DCM team in the Tour de France , but could not finish it.
Danny van Poppel and his brother Boy moved to Team Trek for the 2014 season . In the service of this team he achieved his greatest success to date, the victory in the mass sprint on the 12th stage of the Vuelta a España .
Danny van Poppel is the son of the multiple stage winner of the Tour de France Jean-Paul van Poppel . His mother Leontien van der Lienden competed in road racing at the 1984 Olympic Games .
