Michael Kerkloh

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Michael Kerkloh (born July 5, 1953 in Ahlen / Westphalia) is a German aviation manager. From September 1, 2002 to December 31, 2019, he was Chairman of the Management Board and Labor Director of Flughafen München GmbH - FMG for short.

education and study

Born and raised in Ahlen, Westphalia, Kerkloh began studying economics in Göttingen after completing high school and military service . He continued his studies at the London School of Economics , moved to the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main and graduated in 1979 with a degree in economics with a focus on economic policy, transport and infrastructure policy. At the University of Frankfurt, he was to 1985 a lecturer in economic policy and a doctorate Dr. rer. pole.

Start of professional career

Kerkloh started his professional life as an assistant to the management at Norman Rentrop Verlag in Bonn. His career in aviation began when he moved to Frankfurt Airport in 1987. Initially he worked in the field of operational planning and organization and later became operational manager of aircraft handling at Frankfurt Airport . In 1995, Kerkloh became managing director of Flughafen Hamburg GmbH and, together with Werner Hauschild, managed the fortunes of Hamburg Airport until 2002. During his tenure as Hamburg airport manager, he campaigned for a sustainable improvement in the competitiveness of ground handling services and an early outsourcing to subsidiaries ("Hamburg model"). Kerkloh also dealt with the ecological aspects of airport operations.

CEO of Munich Airport

Since September 2002, Kerkloh has been Chairman of the Management Board at Flughafen München GmbH and has also been Labor Director. He significantly shaped the development of Munich Airport into one of the most important air traffic hubs in Europe and pushed the expansion of the airport, which in 2015 was the first airport in Europe to be awarded the title "Five-Star-Airport". At the annual “World Airport Awards” of the London aviation institute Skytrax , the Bavarian air traffic hub has received the title “Best Airport Europe” several times. Munich Airport regularly takes one of the top positions in global rankings, making it one of the best airports in the world.

Terminal 2, which opened in 2003 and which FMG operates jointly with Deutsche Lufthansa , was expanded in 2016 with a new satellite terminal that offers space for eleven million passengers. The satellite was opened on April 26, 2016, on time and within budget. According to a survey of 14 million passengers by Skytrax, Terminal 2 at Munich Airport was named the world's best terminal in 2017.

In order to be able to cope with the traffic growth forecast for the future, Kerkloh advocated the expansion of a third runway . A plan approval decision has been made for this expansion project, which was repeatedly checked in court and confirmed in 2015 by the Federal Administrative Court in the last instance. The Munich Brüger however, had the referendum stopped the construction of the third runway at Munich Airport on 17 June 2012 found. The construction of a third runway at Munich Airport was rejected by a majority with 54.3% of the votes. 32.8% of Munich's citizens took part in the vote. A political decision on the implementation of the expansion project is still pending. This requires the consent of all shareholders of Flughafen München GmbH. In this context, critics accused Kerkloh of the fact that the traffic growth forecast for the future was unrealistic and that the optimistic growth forecasts for the number of flight movements in the past were not very accurate. In February 2018, the designated Bavarian Prime Minister Markus Söder announced that he would for the time being withdraw from his plans to find a solution to the dispute over the construction of a third runway before the state elections in autumn 2018. He named the year 2025 as the new target for completion. Kerkloh announced that Flughafen München GmbH would continue to fight for the third runway. In November 2018, the two governing parties, the CSU and Free Voters, agreed not to pursue the third runway expansion project until the end of the legislative period in 2023. A corresponding definition was made in the coalition agreement.

The long-time Munich airport manager Dr. Michael Kerkloh left the company on December 31, 2019.
