history

On October 12, 1949, the " Flughafen München-Riem Gesellschaft mbH" was founded by the Free State of Bavaria and the Munich City Council . Wulf-Dieter Graf zu Castell , who held this post until 1972, became managing director . Also in that year, an expansion of the runway to 1907 meters long and 60 meters wide was tackled, which was completed on November 22nd. In 1962, for the first time, more than a million passengers were handled in one year. The "Oechsle Commission" began looking for a new location for the airport in 1963. In 1969 the company was renamed Flughafen München GmbH (FMG). It operated Munich-Riem Airport until May 16, 1992, when it moved to the new location between Erding and Freising. With the relocation of operations, Munich-Riem Airport was shut down and the new Munich Airport opened on May 17, 1992.

In the year it opened, the airport recorded 12 million passengers, and in 2018 it counted 46.3 million passengers. Due to the dynamic growth in traffic, FMG expanded the airport as required and opened Terminal 2 on June 27, 2003, which it planned and built together with Lufthansa and which it now operates. Lufthansa (40%) and FMG (60%) share the financing. In April 2016, a satellite terminal with additional capacity for 11 million passengers went into operation. FMG developed Munich Airport into one of the most powerful air traffic hubs in Europe. Munich Airport was the first airport in Europe to be named a "5-star airport". Further expansion plans include the construction of a third runway . For this purpose, there is a planning approval decision that has been checked several times by the court, the political decision of the shareholders about the realization of the expansion project is still pending. The expansion project is controversial.

In September 2014, the FMG supervisory board decided not to participate in foreign airports.
