The 10th stage of the Tour de France 2019 took place on July 15, 2019. The 217.5-kilometer flat stage led from Saint-Flour to Albi . The stage start was at 12:10 p.m. in the Allée Georges Pompidou , the sharp start was at 12:22 p.m. east of Saint-Georges .
Race course
After several attacks, a six-person breakaway group finally formed: Tony Gallopin , Michael Schär , Natnael Berhane , Anthony Turgis , Mads Würtz Schmidt and Odd Christian Eiking . The peloton let them go, but the gap never exceeded the three-minute mark. A good 65 kilometers before the finish, the lead of the leading group fell under a minute.
On the last ascent of the stage (Côte de La Malric) , about 55 kilometers from the finish, the leading group accelerated their pace and was able to gain a two-minute lead again. The peloton then decided to react, favored by the prevailing wind conditions - about 38 kilometers from the finish, the Deceuninck-Quick-Step team , supported by Team Ineos , Team Astana and EF Education First , initiated a tightening of the pace. Several favorites for the yellow jersey such as Jakob Fuglsang , Giulio Ciccone , Richie Porte , Rigoberto Urán , Dylan Groenewegen and Thibaut Pinot lost contact with the peloton due to several winds . George Bennett , who had finished fourth in the overall standings to date, now belonged to a second group of pursuers. The field was split into several chase groups.
25 kilometers from the finish, the original escapees were overtaken by the first chasing group. Team Sunweb and Team Ineos in particular now dictated the pace of the final kilometers of the stage and led a group of around 40 drivers. The first chasing field of Pinot, Fuglsang, Porte and Uran was able to briefly reduce the gap to around 15 seconds, but the large leading group tightened the pace again and the gap increased again to over a minute. In the leading group, Mikel Landa fell around 19 kilometers from the finish and had to line up behind the first group of chases.
Ten kilometers from the finish, the leading group was 50 seconds ahead of the first chasing group, 1:30 minutes before the second chasing group around Landa and Ciccone and about 3 minutes before the third chasing group around Bennett. In the sprinter duel, Belgian Wout Van Aert won the stage in a photo finish, Elia Viviani came second and Caleb Ewan came third. The first chasing group crossed the finish line 1:40 minutes behind, the second chasing group 2:09 minutes behind. Julian Alaphilippe kept his yellow jersey and increased his lead, while Giulio Ciccone had to hand over the white jersey to Colombian Egan Bernal . The Movistar team took the lead in the team classification . Natnael Berhane was named the most combative driver of the stage.
The first day of rest followed in Albi.
