The 20th stage of the Tour de France 2019 took place on July 27, 2019. The mountain stage led from Albertville to Val Thorens . After the termination of the 19th stage , the section originally planned over 130 kilometers was shortened to only 59.5 kilometers due to further weather forecasts. The planned mountain ratings Cormet de Roselend and Côte de Longefoy will not be crossed. The intermediate sprint in Villard-sur-Doron was also not used, the intermediate sprint was completely dispensed with. The route led directly to Val Thorens. The stage started at 2:30 p.m. instead of the scheduled 1:45 p.m. The sharp start took place at 14:38 on Route nationale 90 at the Poste électrique d'Albertville substation .
Race course
When the sharp start took place, six drivers were able to break away from the main field, these were Dylan Teuns , Magnus Cort Nielsen , Alberto Bettiol , Rui Costa , Lilian Calmejane and Kévin Van Melsen . The top group was able to pull out a lead of around 30 seconds in the first few kilometers and was soon followed by 23 drivers who had caught up with the top group a few kilometers before the climb up the mountain. The new top group was made up of Elia Viviani , Tony Gallopin , Vincenzo Nibali , Dylan Teuns, Sébastien Reichenbach , Nelson Oliveira , Omar Fraile , Magnus Cort Nielsen, Gorka Izagirre , Alberto Bettiol, Michael Woods , Daryl Impey, Joey Rosskopf , Rui Costa, Vegard Stake Laengen , Jasper Stuyven , Nicolas Roche , Pierre-Luc Périchon , Jens Keukeleire , Lilian Calmejane, Niccolò Bonifazio , Anthony Turgis , Ilnur Sakarin , Nils Politt , Frederik Backaert , Kévin Van Melsen, Steve Cummings , Ben King and Maxime Bouet . At the foot of the final climb, the leading group had a lead of around 2:30 minutes on the peloton.
It is the moment when the leading group - and later the peloton as well - splits up into several groups. While Nibali, Gallopin, Sakarin, Perichon and Woods were able to break away from the top group, Jumbo-Visma accelerated the pace in the peloton team . The peloton got smaller and smaller, a group of favorites formed around Steven Kruijswijk , Rigoberto Urán , Julian Alaphilippe , Egan Bernal , Emanuel Buchmann , Geraint Thomas , Mikel Landa , Nairo Quintana , Richie Porte , Warren Barguil , Simon Yates , Romain Bardet , Alejandro Valverde and her helpers. 28 kilometers from the finish, the leading group had a lead of 2:20 minutes over the favorites group, 18 kilometers from the finish the gap was 1:50 minutes. In the meantime, Omar Fraile was able to join the leading group. The Jumbo-Visma team (with Laurens De Plus at the top) continued to accelerate the pace, with the overall tenth Richie Porte falling out of the favorites group.
Due to the acceleration in the favorites group, the gap melted by about 40 seconds over the next three kilometers - 15 kilometers from the finish, the lead for the leading group was 1:10 minutes. With 12 kilometers to go, Vincenzo Nibali successfully pulled away from the top group and continued as a soloist. At the same time (around 13 kilometers from the finish) Marc Soler attacked from the favorites group and the pace increased, as a result Alaphilippe and the wearer of the polka dot jersey Romain Bardet fell back. Simon Yates, Marco Soler and Warren Barguil attacked from the group of favorites 6 kilometers from the finish. A little later, Nairo Quintana attacked from the favorites group. However, the four drivers and other pursuers from the former leading group were caught up again a few kilometers from the finish. Nibali had a lead of 36 seconds with 2 kilometers to go. Mikel Landa attacked on the flamme rouge and a little later his team-mate Alejandro Valverde from the favorites group attacked, they were able to work out a few seconds advantage. Vincenzo Nibali was the first to cross the finish line and was also named the most combative driver of the stage. Alejandro Valverde came in second and Mikel Landa crossed the finish line in third. With the stage win in Nibali and 2nd place in Valverde, Romain Bardet was also the winner of the mountain classification thanks to the points awarded in the mountain classification at the summit. Egan Bernal finished fourth and consolidated his lead in the overall standings.
