The 11th stage of the Tour de France 2019 took place on July 17, 2019. The 167-kilometer flat stage led from Albi to Toulouse . The German Rick Zabel ( Team Katusha Alpecin ) no longer competed due to a severe cold; he was the first driver from the German-speaking area who could not finish the tour. The stage start was at 1:25 p.m. at the Jean-François-de-Lapérouse monument, the sharp start took place at 1:46 p.m. east of Castelnau-de-Lévis .
Race course
Lilian Calmejane , Anthony Perez , Stéphane Rossetto and Aimé De Gendt formed a breakaway group at the beginning of the stage and were able to develop a lead of around 3:15 minutes in the further course. The stage was very calm and the showdown between the breakaway and the main field began about 50 kilometers from the finish, the gap between the leading group and the peloton was about a minute.
30 kilometers from the finish there was a mass fall in the main field. Affected were u. a. Nairo Quintana , Sebastian Langeveld , Giacomo Nizzolo , Giulio Ciccone and Richie Porte . Even Niki Terpstra was involved in the big crash; the Dutchman from the Total Direct Énergie team had to give up the tour due to a serious injury. While Quintana and Porte managed to catch up with the peloton again, Ciccone, Nizzolo and Langeveld were several minutes behind the peloton.
Aimé De Gendt attacked from the top group about 10 kilometers from the finish and tried his luck as a soloist. However, the Belgian was caught 4.5 kilometers from the finish - the jury named him the most combative driver of the stage. The peloton drove to the goal at high speed, the stage win was decided by a mass sprint. Caleb Ewan won razor- thin ahead of Dylan Groenewegen , Elia Viviani came third . There were no changes in the ratings. Giulio Ciccone lost 12:03 minutes and crossed the finish line last, he had to keep his hopes for a good position in the overall standings - previously 10th place with 2:23 minutes behind, after this stage in 29th place with 14:35 minutes behind the leader - as well as the fight for the white jersey - with 13:19 minutes behind the leader - put aside for now.
