The 17th stage of the Tour de France 2019 took place on July 24, 2019. The 200-kilometer hilly stage led from the Pont du Gard to Gap . The Spaniard Luis León Sánchez ( Team Astana ) no longer competed for the tour due to back problems. Team Sunweb's Cees Bol from the Netherlands also stopped taking part in the tour. The stage start was at 12:25 p.m., the sharp start took place at 12:41 p.m. northeast of Fournès near the A9 motorway .

Race course

At the start of the stage, 34 riders separated from the main field: Daniel Oss , Lukas Pöstlberger , Kasper Asgreen , Alexis Gougeard , Dylan Teuns , Nelson Oliveira , Omar Fraile , Gorka Izagirre , Magnus Cort Nielsen , Simon Clarke , Tom Scully , Christopher Juul-Jensen , Matteo Trentin , Greg Van Avermaet , Michael Schär , Sven Erik Bystrøm , Rui Costa , Sergio Henao , Vegard Stake Laengen , Bauke Mollema , Toms Skujiņš , Jasper Stuyven , Nicholas Roche , Natnael Berhane , Jesús Herrada , Anthony Perez , Pierre-Luc Périchon , Thomas De Gendt , Jens Keukeleire , Nils Politt , Xandro Meurisse , Andrea Pasqualon , Edvald Boasson Hagen and Ben King . However, Magnus Cort Nielsen fell out of the top group after a few kilometers, he had a puncture and was back in the main field. Around 125 kilometers from the finish, the leading group had pulled out a lead of almost 8 minutes and reached 14:45 minutes with 40 kilometers from the finish. Shortly afterwards, the first attacks began in the leading group.

30 kilometers from the finish, eleven drivers escaped after several attempts to break away with Oss, Asgreen, Gougeard, Izagirre, Scully, Trentin, Van Avermaet, Laengen, Skujiņš, Périchon and King. Behind them the chasing group was disorganized, which gradually increased the distance. Trentin increased the pace again, Gougeard lost the connection and joined the chasing group. Shortly before the ascent to Col de la Sentinelle, Asgreen accelerated again and the leading group reduced to five drivers: Van Avermaet, Skujiņš, Izagirre, Oss and Trentin. 14 kilometers from the finish - shortly before the last mountain classification - Trentin attacked and drove on as a soloist, followed by Pierre-Luc Périchon, who was able to fight his way back into the top group shortly before.

Matteo Trentin was the first to cross the Col de la Sentinelle, almost half a minute later he was followed by Kasper Asgreen, who overtook Perichon a few hundred meters before the mountain classification. On the descent, Trentin made up more seconds so that he crossed the finish line first. Kasper Asgreen took second place, Greg Van Avermaet came third. The main field reached the finish line more than 20 minutes behind.

The German Tony Martin ( Team Jumbo-Visma ) and the Welshman Luke Rowe ( Team Ineos ) were disqualified by the jury after the end of the stage due to video evidence. According to UCI video commissioner Jean-Michel Voets , Luke Rowe had disrupted the management work of the Jumbo-Visma team (the so-called braking ), whereupon Tony Martin deliberately pushed the Welshman to the side of the road, who almost touched a spectator and fell. Luke Rowe returned the favor with a slap in the face. According to media reports, there should have been another dispute between the two drivers after the stage finish. In a video statement that was published in the course of the evening, both drivers apologized for their behavior, but also emphasized that the judgment was too harsh. The teams appealed to the jury's decision and hoped that their drivers would stay. However, their objection was not approved and both drivers had to leave the tour, their disqualification was confirmed.
