The 6th stage of the Tour de France 2019 took place on July 11, 2019. The 160.5-kilometer mountain stage led from Mulhouse to the Planche des Belles Filles . With seven climbs, three of them in the 1st category, this stage in the Vosges was one of the difficult ones on this tour - the riders had to overcome around 4000 meters of altitude. The landscape is shaped by the lakes of the Plateau des Mille Étangs (Plain of a Thousand Lakes), which rises slightly to the northeast. New Zealander Patrick Bevin ( CCC Team ) did not compete again due to two broken ribs that he sustained in a fall in the 4th stage (the first rider to retire in 2019). The stage start was at 1:05 p.m. at the Palais des Sports near the Stade de l'Ill , the sharp start was at 1:24 p.m. in Richwiller .

Race course

At the beginning of the stage, a top group of 14 separated from the main field: Benoît Cosnefroy , Dylan Teuns , Serge Pauwels , Julien Bernard , Giulio Ciccone , Nikias Arndt , Natnael Berhane , Thomas De Gendt , Tim Wellens , Fabien Grellier , Nils Politt , Xandro Meurisse , Andrea Pasqualon and André Greipel . The top group quickly developed a large lead, with 136 kilometers to go, the gap to the main field was already over 5:30 minutes. On the way to the Ballon d'Alsace the lead was over 8 minutes - on the ascent Greipel lost contact with the leading group. Until then, the peloton was largely led by Deceuninck-Quick-Step . In the further course of the stage, the teams Bahrain-Merida , Bora-hansgrohe and Movistar Team took over the follow-up work, the gap narrowed under the leadership of the large teams.

De Gendt tried a solo attack on the ascent to Col des Croix , but was overtaken by four pursuers on the way to Col des Chevrères - De Gendt could no longer keep up with the pace and fell behind. From now on, the stage was led by Wellens, Meurisse, Teuns and Ciccone. When attacking the final climb, the now four-man leading group had a lead of around 4 minutes, they kept their chances of victory. About 5 kilometers before the finish, Wellens and Meurisse lost touch, the stage win was decided between Teuns and Ciccone. Meanwhile, in the peloton, Warren Barguil , Mikel Landa , David Gaudu and Thibaut Pinot attempted an attack, which failed, however, and they were recaptured.

On Flamme rouge , Teuns and Ciccone had a lead of over 2 minutes on the pursuit. In the last kilometer - a paved gravel road with a 24% increase - Teuns was able to win. 100 meters from the finish, Ciccone had no more strength in his legs and left Teuns to win the day. Third was Meurisse (+ 1:05 minutes). When the chasing group reached the flame rouge, Julian attacked Alaphilippe . Geraint Thomas and Pinot joined his rear wheel . Thomas achieved fourth place (+ 1:44 minutes) with a powerful final sprint, Pinot was fifth (+ 1:46 minutes) and Alaphilippe sixth (+ 1:46 minutes). Alaphilippe lost the yellow jersey , Giulio Ciccone was the new bearer of the yellow jersey  - thanks to the time bonuses achieved. Ciccone became the new leader in the junior competition . The main favorites Nairo Quintana , Jakob Fuglsang , Mikel Landa , Emanuel Buchmann , Richie Porte , Egan Bernal , Adam Yates , Daniel Martin and Rigoberto Urán crossed the finish line with a time gap between 1:51 minutes and 2:02 minutes . Tim Wellens was named the most combative driver of the stage. Trek-Segafredo took the lead in the team classification . During the stage trip, Frenchman Nicolas Edet had to give up the tour due to illness. At the time of his exit, he was already 20 minutes behind the peloton.
