The 9th stage of the Tour de France 2019 took place on July 14, 2019. It was a French national holiday and the Frenchman Julian Alaphilippe drove in the yellow jersey. The 170.5 kilometer long hilly stage led from Saint-Étienne to Brioude . The stage start was at 13:05 at the Stade Geoffroy-Guichard , the sharp start took place at 13:27 north of Saint-Genest-Lerpt .

Race course

On the first kilometers, a top group of 14 formed from Lukas Pöstlberger , Oliver Naesen , Iván Garcia Cortina , Jan Tratnik , Tony Martin , Simon Clarke , Daryl Impey , Jasper Stuyven , Nicolas Roche , Jesús Herrada , Tiesj Benoot , Romain Sicard , Edvald Boasson Hagen and Anthony Delaplace . Nils Politt had previously tried to pull away from the field of drivers, but his attempt to break away failed.

On the first ascent to the Mur d'Aurec-sur-Loire , Marc Soler joined the leading group, so that the breakaway group comprised 15 riders. Also Rui Costa tried, drive up close to the leading group, but failed. The outliers were able to develop a lead of more than 10 minutes in the course of the stage. After the second ascent (Côte des Guillaumanches) , Pöstlberger launched an attack, and the group of pursuers split up into several groups. Pöstlberger was put back on the climb to the Côte de Saint-Just-près-Brioude . Shortly before the last mountain classification, Impey, Benoot and Roche separated from the rest of the drivers. The top trio now tried to win the stage among themselves. About 13 kilometers from the finish, the trio had a lead of 15 seconds over the chasing quartet Tratnik, Naesen, Stuyven and Soler. Benoot attacked eight kilometers from the finish, Impey followed; Roche could no longer keep up with the pace of the top duo. In the last 100 meters Impey won the sprint stage. Tratnik came in third. The peloton crossed the finish line 16:25 minutes after the top duo. There were no changes in the ratings.

The stage was overshadowed by a serious fall a few kilometers after the sharp start. The Italian Alessandro De Marchi ( CCC Team ), who the day before was the last to keep up with runaway Thomas De Gendt until a few kilometers before the finish , had to give up the race. He sustained serious injuries including a fractured collarbone, a broken rib and a bruised lung.
