Race course
There were several unsuccessful attempts to break away. In the intermediate sprint in Les Thuiles , a 34-strong breakaway group was able to form: Dylan Van Baarle , Maximiliano Richeze , Romain Bardet , Mickaël Chérel , Mathias Frank , Damiano Caruso , Matthieu Ladagnous , Nairo Quintana , Andrey Amador , Carlos Verona , Gorka Izagirre , Alexei Luzenko , Amund Grøndahl Jansen , Mike Teunissen , Alberto Bettiol , Michael Woods , Adam Yates , Daryl Impey , Christopher Juul-Jensen , Greg Van Avermaet , Simon Geschke , Serge Pauwels , Sergio Henao , Julien Bernard , Nikias Arndt , Lennard Kämna , Pierre-Luc Périchon , Stéphane Rossetto , Tiesj Benoot , Jasper De Buyst , Tim Wellens , Paul Ourselin , Nils Politt and Amaël Moinard . When climbing to the Col de Vars , the leading group had a lead of almost 6 minutes and the peloton crossed the Col de Vars with a gap of 7:30 minutes.
Around 93 kilometers from the finish, Greg Van Avermaet and Julien Bernard decided to go on the offensive and pulled away from the leading group. With the climb to the Col d'Izoard , the third mountain classification of the stage, the top duo had a lead of over a minute over the group of pursuers. On the way to the third mountain classification, Van Avermaet couldn't keep up with the pace and Bernard drove the rest of the mountain climb as a soloist. In the meantime, a new chasing group of nine drivers formed: Quintana, Bardet, Luzenko, Adam Yates, Woods, Pauwels, Bennoot, Caruso and Kämna tried to catch up with the two drivers. The main field, however, became smaller as the teams Bora-hansgrohe and Movistar accelerated the pace. Bernard had a lead of about half a minute on the chasing group, the main field was about 5 minutes behind the leader. Shortly before the summit, Bernand's solo attempt was put to an end. The Italian Damiano Caruso and the French Romain Bardet overtook him.
At the foot of the Col du Galibier , the last mountain classification of the stage, a top group of eleven now drove with Bardet, Chérel, Caruso, Quintana, Lutsenko, Woods, Adam Yates, Pauwels, Kämna, Benoot and Bernard. The group of favorites around Julian Alaphilippe , Egan Bernal , Emanuel Buchmann , Geraint Thomas , Mikel Landa , Thibaut Pinot and Steven Kruijswijk were about 5:30 minutes behind. During the climb to the last mountain classification, several groups split up, the leading group reduced to seven drivers. Then Caruso increased the pace around 9 kilometers before the summit. While Bardet, Lutsenko, Woods and Quintana were able to follow him, Kämna and Adam Yates lost touch. Then Lutsenko attacked about 8 kilometers from the summit, his pursuers were able to catch him again. Shortly thereafter, Quintana was able to break away from the top group with a quick start. Bardet and Lutsenko tried to catch up with him. When crossing the summit, Quintana had a lead of about 1:30 minutes on Bardet, the pursuers tried to keep the distance small. In the favorites group, Bernal attacked and was able to pull away successfully. About 1 kilometer before the summit, his teammate Geraint Thomas went on the offensive and tried to pull away, but Buchmann, Kruijswijk, Landa and Pinot were able to beat him again. Alaphilippe had problems, however, a gap of several seconds opened up. At the summit, Bardet was 1:45 minutes behind the leader, Lutsenko a few seconds behind. Bernal was about 5:30 minutes behind the leader, the favorites group was more than 6 minutes behind and Alaphilippe crossed the summit almost 20 seconds later. Alaphilippe was able to reconnect with the favorites group in the descent.
The Colombian Nairo Quintana won the stage, his solo run was successful. Romain Bardet came second (+ 1:35 minutes), Alexei Lutsenko crossed the finish line in third (+ 2:28 minutes). Egan Bernal (8th place, + 4:46 minutes), who made up 32 seconds over Alaphilippe, improved to 2nd place in the overall standings - 1:30 minutes behind the leader of the yellow jersey . The favorite group reached the goal together with Alaphilippe. The Frenchman Romain Bardet took over the dotted jersey . The Belgian Greg Van Avermaet was named the most combative driver of the stage by the jury . The Movistar Team was again the leader in the team classification .
