geography

Éclaires is located about 40 kilometers southwest of Verdun in the Argonne . In the east, the municipality of Éclaires borders the Meuse department . The municipal area of almost eleven square kilometers is characterized by flat to gently hilly terrain. Several small rivers ( Grand Fossé des Bois, Thabas , Évre ) converge here, joining to form the Rivière Hardillon , which flows into the Aisne in the neighboring municipality of Le Chemin . In the extreme southwest, the municipality touches the left bank of the Aisne. Remnants of alluvial forest have been preserved on the Aisne and, apart from two smaller forests near the Aisne and in the extreme northwestern tip, most of the community is free from forests. The highest point in the municipality is reached at 220 meters above sea level on the southwest slope of the 252 m high hill Côte de Brémont , which forms the southern edge of the actual Argonne massif. The districts of Grigny, Gumont and Ferme de Vernaux Fays belong to Éclaires . Éclaires is surrounded by the neighboring communities Passavant-en-Argonne in the north, Brizeaux in the east, Seuil-d'Argonne in the south-east, Les Charmontois in the south, Le Vieil-Dampierre in the south-west and Le Chemin in the west.
