Suippes is a French commune with 3913 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Marne department in the Grand Est region . Administratively it belongs to the arrondissement Châlons-en-Champagne and was the main town (chef-lieu) of the canton of Suippes of the same name until its dissolution in 2015 , since then it has belonged to the canton of Argonne Suippe et Vesle . The inhabitants are called Suippas .
geography
Suippes lies on the Suippe River and is surrounded by the neighboring communities of Souain-Perthes-lès-Hurlus in the north, Somme-Suippe in the east and south-east, Bussy-le-Château in the south, Cuperly in the south-west and Jonchery-sur-Suippe in the west and north-west .
The former Route nationale 77 and Route nationale 31 and the Saint-Hilaire-au-Temple-Hagondange railway line run through the municipality .
history
During the First World War, Suippes was roughly on the Hindenburg line . In 1918 the place thus became the scene of fighting. In autumn 2006, Volker Eckert murdered the Polish prostitute Agnieszka Bos here.

military
The 15th artillery regiment of the French army was stationed in Suippes until about 1993. It also had nuclear weapons - grade Pluton - type short-range missiles and all -terrain AMX-30 tracked vehicles from which these missiles could be fired.
Today the 40th artillery regiment (French: 40e régiment d'artillerie ) is in Suippes .
