Saint-Thomas-en-Argonne is a French commune with 40 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Marne department in the Grand Est region (until 2015 Champagne-Ardenne ). It belongs to the Arrondissement of Châlons-en-Champagne and to the community association L'Argonne Champenoise, founded in 2014 .
geography
The municipality of Saint-Thomas-en-Argonne is located about 43 kilometers west of Verdun on the right bank of the Aisne River . The Aisne not only forms the western boundary of Saint-Thomas-en-Argonne, but also separates the Argonne landscape in the east from the Champagne sèche , the "dry Champagne" in the west. The area of the 4.43 km² community extends from the banks of the Aisne at 125 m above sea level to the northeast to the wooded foothills of the Argonne. In the extreme northeast, the highest point in the municipality is reached at 185 m above sea level. A military cemetery was set up here. In the north, the municipality has a share in the nature reserve of the large forest Forêt Domaniale de Servon-Melzicourt . In the south of the municipality the Biesme river flows into the Aisne. The village of Saint-Thomas is located on a plateau near the steep edge that drops the terrain by 25 meters to the Aisne Valley. Saint-Thomas-en-Argonne is surrounded by the neighboring communities Servon-Melzicourt in the west and north, Vienne-le-Château in the east and south and Vienne-la-Ville in the south-west.
history
The Saint-Thomas Priory, founded in 1096, was dependent on the Saint-Remi Abbey in Reims ; the privileges of the priory were granted by Pope Lucius III in 1182 . approved. Monastery life ended around 1530 and in the 18th century the priory was the church of the pastor of the neighboring parish of Vienne-le-Château; The monastery buildings were destroyed around 1633 and the last inventory was sold in 1792. The current parish church belongs to the deanery of Cernay-en-Dormois in the diocese of Reims .
During the French Revolution , the community was named Bel-Air-sur-Aisne and Mont-Aisne . It was not until 1921 that Saint-Thomas got the suffix -en-Argonne .
The village was completely destroyed in the First World War. The reconstruction of Saint-Thomas took place in the 1920s; the town hall and school building was built in 1923 with the help of the nearby city of Courbevoie .

Saint-Thomas-en-Argonne is connected to the neighboring municipalities by back roads. In the small town of Sainte-Menehould , twelve kilometers to the south, there is a connection to the A 4 autoroute from Paris to Strasbourg .
