Mourmelon-le-Grand is a French commune with 5085 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Marne department in the Grand Est region in the Châlons-en-Champagne arrondissement in the Mourmelon-Vesle et Monts de Champagne canton (until 2015: Suippes canton ) .

geography

The D19 département road, which the D21 and D335 meet here , runs through the town . There is an important training area for the French army near the city .

history

Entrance to the military cemetery

1856 was by Napoleon III. the establishment of the military base was ordered and the actual inauguration took place in 1857. During the First World War , on September 3, 1914, the place and the military training area were occupied by German troops. The retreating French units left large amounts of equipment, including some aircraft. In the end of the Second World War , the 17th US Airborne Division was stationed in Mourmelon-le-Grand at the end of 1944 .

There is a large French military cemetery in Mourmelon-le-Grand.
