history

Destroyed church with a hanging clock in 1917
Russian military cemetery with chapel

The region was already settled in Roman times , as can be seen from some architectural evidence. The place suffered severe destruction in the First World War , as major fighting took place in the immediate vicinity over a long period of time. After German troops occupied the region at the beginning of September 1914, after the Battle of the Marne they retreated northwards across the Marne and, from September 13, 1914, set up positions north of the village. There were sometimes fierce position battles. The church in the village was badly destroyed during the war. The ruin was known because of the church tower clock that remained at the highest point. In 1925 the church was rebuilt. There is a military cemetery for Russian soldiers who fought in this area on the French side during World War I. A Russian Orthodox chapel was built here in 1937.
