The 5th stage of the Tour de France 2019 took place on July 10, 2019. The 175.5-kilometer hilly stage led from Saint-Dié-des-Vosges to Colmar . The stage start began at 1:15 pm at Rond-Point George Sand on the Meurthe in Saint-Dié-des-Vosges, the sharp start took place at 1:24 pm in Remomeix near the regional airport " René Fonck ".

Race course

Many riders tried to break away from the peloton. It was only after 20 kilometers that a four-man top group consisting of Toms Skujiņš , Simon Clarke , Mads Würtz Schmidt and Tim Wellens was able to form. The peloton was controlled by the Bora-hansgrohe , which was able to keep the gap to the leading group under three minutes. The wearer of the mountain jersey , Tim Wellens, took the opportunity to win the first two climbs - and thus consolidated his position in the mountain classification.

On the way to the third mountain classification of the day ( Côte des Trois Épis ), the leading group was only about 1:30 minutes apart. Mads Würtz Schmidt fell back from the top group, he could no longer keep up with the pace of the other three drivers. Shortly afterwards, Toms Skujiņš pulled away from the top group. Clark and Wellens tried to keep up, but had to admit defeat - Skujiņš tried to get to the goal alone. At the same time the pace increased in the peloton and some sprinters ( Elia Viviani , Alexander Kristoff , Dylan Groenewegen and Caleb Ewan ) had lost ground in the main field. Little by little, Clark and Wellens were overtaken.

When he crossed the last mountain classification, Skujiņš had a lead of just 15 seconds. Shortly afterwards he was provided by the peloton - Skujiņš was named the most combative driver of the stage by the race management . Team Sunweb in particular dictated the pace of the last 25 kilometers of the stage and led a group of around 80 drivers.

Rui Costa attempted a solo attack about 7 kilometers from the finish but was caught again at 2.2 kilometers from the finish. In the sprinter duel, Peter Sagan won the stage, Wout Van Aert was second and Matteo Trentin was third. Julian Alaphilippe finished 10th and defended his yellow jersey from Van Aert, who thanks to the bonuses was able to reduce the gap to Alaphilippe to 14 seconds.
