Flanders Trofee

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Flandrien-Trofee is an award given to cyclists by the Flemish daily newspaper Het Nieuwsblad .

The award has been presented since 2003, originally on the basis of a public vote. Since 2008, the athletes themselves have been choosing the winners from a list of suggestions compiled by a panel of experts. Since then, the award has only gone to racing drivers from Belgium, but an international category has been introduced. The Flandrien-Trofee itself was initially intended for male elite cyclists, but other categories have since been added.

In 2016 the Swiss Fabian Cancellara received the Lifetime Achievement Award .

The term Flandria describes a cyclist who is characterized by “special strength” and “fighting spirit”, even under adverse weather conditions such as the Flemish spring classics .
