Walter Ablinger (born May 12, 1969 in Schärding ) is an Austrian disabled athlete . He starts in cycling ( paracycling category H3 (H2 until 2013)), in alpine skiing , cross-country skiing , triathlon , athletics and swimming.

biography

Walter Ablinger is a trained carpenter . After his journeyman's examination in 1987, he served as a soldier from 1988 to 1996, primarily on UN missions in Cyprus and Syria . Then he worked again as a carpenter. On June 21, 1999 Ablinger fell from a scaffolding on a construction site, has been paraplegic and has been in a wheelchair ever since. In 2001 Ablinger retrained as an office clerk. He is married and has three daughters.

Athletic career

Walter Ablinger began exercising in the clinic during rehabilitation. He is mainly active on the handbike . In 2009 and 2010 he was Austrian national champion in the individual time trial and in 2012 in road racing. In 2011 he became European champion and in 2012 he won the overall World Cup. Also in 2012, he started at the Summer Paralympics and won two medals: a gold medal in the road race and a silver medal in the individual time trial . In 2016 he won the silver medal in the individual time trial. In 2013 he became world champion in road racing, the following year he won bronze. He also takes part in numerous 24-hour drives and marathons.

In the other sports in which Ablinger is active, he achieved success, mainly on a national level.
