Tower of Babel (Eng. "Tower of Babel") is a song by the British singer and composer Elton John , the lyrics were written by Bernie Taupin .

The album `` Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy '' was realized as a concept album and takes up in chronological order as well as with autobiographical intention John and Taupin's life in London from 1967 to 1970. "Tower of Babel" is the second of ten songs. The conceptual plot continues with the title Bitter Fingers .

background

Taupin is known for his finely turned, lyrical texts, the meaning of which is sometimes difficult for the reader to understand. “Tower of Babel” is full of allusions and allusions to the party scene (“It's party time”) in London towards the end of the 1960s.

Taupin links recognizable drug consumption with biblical images of sin ("Sodom meet Gomorrah"), modern synonyms of drug abuse ("Snow, Cement") and morally questionable behavior ("With the call girls under the table" - "With the call girls among the Tables ").

The probably pointless pastime in the scene is consistently implemented ("Those hungry hunters, tracking down the hours" - "The hungry hunters plan their hours exactly") and repeatedly repeated for the fun of the participants, but without any depth and without help for those in trouble People ("But where were all you shoulders when we cried" - "But where were all your shoulders when we cried").

John and Taupin saw London as an inhospitable city. They wore the cheap fur coats, which were modern at the time, and tried to establish themselves among the musicians. Taupin in particular experienced the difference to his rural home and the rather calm rhythm of life there particularly intensely.
