Julia Caroline Küsswetter (* in Tübingen , according to other sources in Zurich , Switzerland ) is a German opera and lied singer ( soprano ).

Life

Julia Küsswetter graduated from Uhland-Gymnasium Tübingen in 1995 . She then studied singing, initially in 1997 at the Hanns Eisler Music Academy in Berlin with Semion Skigin and Norma Sharp . In 1998 she moved to the Graz University of Music . From 1999 she studied at the University of Music and Theater in Munich with Helmut Deutsch and Josef Loibl and graduated in 2003 with an artistic concert diploma with distinction. She was also a student at the Bavarian Theater Academy August Everding and took part in master classes with Emma Kirkby , Barbara Schlick and Ruth Ziesak . Her repertoire includes opera and concert roles by Monteverdi, Bach, Hasse, Purcell, Handel, Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, Schumann, Mendelssohn, Brahms, Humperdinck, Lortzing, Verdi, Liszt, Mahler, Strauss, Korngold and Rihm.

While still a student, she made her debut at the Munich Biennale in 2001 under Gary Bertini . Subsequently, she was engaged at the Chemnitz Opera. At the Munich Biennale in 2002 she sang the world premiere of the opera “Monologe für Zwei” by Jörg Widmann , directed by Florentine Klepper. From 2004 to 2006 she was a permanent member of the ensemble at the Chemnitz Opera. Since then she has been working freelance, mainly as a concert singer.

In the following years she appeared regularly at the Bad Hersfeld Festival , the Lake Constance Festival and the international Bach Festival in Schaffhausen and at the D'Accord classical music festival . She sang under the direction of conductors such as Philipp Amelung , Christoph Hammer , Tobias Hiller, Ekkehard Klemm , Pia Praetorius, Beat Raaflaub and David Stahl and worked a. a. with the Munich Philharmonic , the Ensemble L`arpa festante, the Georgian Chamber Orchestra Ingolstadt and the Southwest German Philharmonic Konstanz.

In June 2007, on the occasion of the 800th anniversary of Elisabeth of Thuringia , she took over the title role in Franz Liszt's oratorio Die Legende von der Sankt Elisabeth at a concert with the Marburg Concert Choir and the Sinfonia Silesia Kattowitz in the Church of St. Peter and Paul in Marburg . In August 2007 she sang the role of Marie in the opera Zar und Zimmermann at the Bad Hersfeld Festival in the Bad Hersfeld monastery ruins . In August 2008 she took on the role of Gretel in the opera Hansel and Gretel at the Bad Hersfeld Festival in the Bad Hersfeld monastery ruins . In October 2011 she made her debut in Dubai under the musical direction of Robert Schröter and the direction of Cornelia Lanz in a semi-staged performance of Georg Friedrich Handel's last opera Imeneo . In the same year she made her US debut at a recital in New York.

On May 8, 2015, on the occasion of the 70th day of the liberation of the Theresienstadt concentration camp , she sang as a soloist at a concert of the St. Gallen Oratorio Choir and the Moravian Philharmonic Ostrava in the Church of the Resurrection of the Lord (Garrison Church) in Terezín .

Julia Küsswetter is a lecturer for singing and vocal ensembles at the vocational school for music in the Middle Franconia district .
