Liiva is a village ( Estonian küla ) on the third largest Estonian island of Muhu . It is the capital of the rural community of the same name ( Muhu vald ) in the Saare district ( Saare maakond ).

description

Liiva has 178 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2011). The place is on the connection road that leads from Kuivastu with its ferry port from the mainland to Saaremaa Island .

The village emerged in the center of the island at the beginning of the 18th century and was initially called Muhu ( poppy ). After the Second World War it became the administrative center of the rural community. Today there is a kindergarten, a primary school, a library, a post office and a pharmacy in the village.

Muhu Church

The Evangelical Lutheran Katharinenkirche is one of the landmarks of the island. It was the center of the historic Muhu parish .

A first church was built between 1266 and 1270. After being destroyed in the years 1343–1345, the simple church, which has been preserved to this day, was built as a Gothic stone church in the 14th century .

Pastorate

Next to the church is the pastorate, built in 1832 . The most famous son of the place is the doctor and rector of the University of Tartu , Hermann Adolf Alexander Schmidt (1831-1894), who was born as the son of the local pastor in Liiva.
