The São Luiz do Tapajós hydropower plant was a planned hydropower plant on the Rio Tapajós in the Brazilian state of Pará with a planned installed capacity of 6,356.4  MW .

The reservoir should have an area of ​​722.25 km², the drop height should be 35.9 m. In total, 31 Kaplan turbines with 198 MW and two with 109.2 MW were planned.

On August 4, 2016, the environmental authority IBAMA refused the project the necessary environmental license, without which the project cannot be built. The indigenous group of the Munduruku and the environmental protection organization Greenpeace had jointly mobilized against the project planned by the government.

Effects

The project was criticized by environmentalists because the construction of the dam was supposed to partially flood an existing national park area. For this reason, a law was passed in May 2012 that reorganized the boundaries of the national park. The environmental impact assessment for the Tapajós Basin was completed in September 2014.

The work could also have affected the indigenous people living nearby. The Munduruku and the Apiaká belong to the indigenous peoples there . These communities demanded prior consultation, a right guaranteed by ILO Convention 169.
