Vicelinkirche St. Jacobi
The Evangelical Lutheran Vicelinkirche St. Jacobi is a church in Bornhöved in the German state Schleswig-Holstein . It belongs to the Vicelinkirchen .
history
The Bornhöved Church of St. Jacobi was consecrated in 1149 by the Oldenburg Bishop Vizelin . It was originally a fortified church , as Bornhöved was in the border area between Holsten and the Wenden area . It is uncertain whether a mission chapel previously stood in the area of the chancel.
In 1739 the children's house, today's sacristy, was added, which formerly served as a lounge for the baptized . Around 1859 this room was used as a morgue. Until 1873, all burials took place in the approximately one-hectare cemetery around the church. Then the cemetery was laid out at the north exit of the village and a chapel was built there in 1878.
Building description
The walls of the nave are made of field stones and bricked with Segeberger lime. The east wall of the church, which was built later, is supported by four strong buttresses. Former Romanesque windows can still be seen on the north wall.
The current 40 meter high Romanesque tower was built in 1866. The previous tower was made of wood, had a shingle roof and was clad with pine boards.
