Basel-Muttenz marshalling yard

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The marshalling yard Basel-Muttenz , officially Basel SBB RB is a limit rangierbahnhof in Switzerland. It is therefore primarily used for the formation of freight trains in north-south traffic and not for traffic within Switzerland. It is operated by the SBB Infrastructure Division (Operations Department).

Basel SBB RB is as bilateral marshalling yard created: Parallel to the passenger station Muttenz ( 615772  /  264791 ) lie to the north of Basel SBB RB I ( six hundred and sixteen thousand one hundred and thirty-two  /  264743 ) for north-south traffic (ie for trains from Germany, France and the Rhine ports ) and Basel SBB RB II ( six hundred sixteen thousand three hundred fifty-eight  /  two hundred sixty-four thousand eight hundred and forty-three ) for the South-North traffic.

history

The Basel-Muttenz I marshalling yard was opened in 1933 and replaced the Wolf freight yard , which opened on March 10, 1876, in its function as a marshalling yard. For cost reasons, the construction of Basel SBB RB II was postponed in the 1920s until 1956; the opening took place in 1976.

technology

The Basel-Muttenz marshalling yard is structured according to the classic structure with a subdivision into entry group, directional group with drainage mountain, station group and exit group. Freight trains from the north reach the marshalling yard via the Basel connecting line . These and the marshalling yard are equipped with both Swiss and German train protection, and the German pantograph area is kept free. This means that trains from Germany can reach the marshalling yard directly without having to re-tension. There is also a connecting line from France that passes the Basel SBB passenger station. However, two-frequency locomotives must be used here, these can run below 16.7 Hz with German Indusi .
