Wolf freight yard
The Wolf freight yard is a marshalling and freight yard in the city of Basel .
The marshalling yard of the Swiss Federal Railways , east of Basel SBB station , was opened on March 10, 1876. A Centralbahn freight yard was put into operation in 1900. The Basel-Muttenz marshalling yard replaced Wolf station as a marshalling yard in 1933, which since then has only been used for cargo handling.
On March 4, 1945, the Wolf freight yard was mistakenly attacked by nine US bombers . A passenger train and neighboring residential areas were hit; however, there were no fatalities.
It is planned to disband the station. A study is to be carried out by 2018 to find out how the 16-hectare area should be used. We are currently talking about a new district with a mixture of offices, apartments, service companies, logistics companies and green spaces. The Basel government is expected to make the first decisions in 2019.
