history

Koguva was first mentioned in 1532. The Livonian order master Wolter von Plettenberg declared the farmer Hansken, his son and all descendants to be land free under certain conditions. The following rulers of Muhu also accepted the letter of freedom until the 19th century. It is the only surviving document of its kind in present-day Estonia.

Muhu Open Air Museum

The Estonian writer Juhan Smuul , a descendant of Hansken, was born in Koguva in 1922 on the Tooma ( Tooma talu ) farm . His family's house and yard were converted into a museum in 1973. In 1990 the island museum of Muhu was founded there. It offers an insight into traditional life and work on Muhu. Affiliated to the museum are a museum for textile art from Muhu, a historic schoolhouse, a modern gallery and a building for traveling exhibitions. The monument to Juhan Smuul is in the immediate vicinity on the Baltic Sea.
