Laheküla is a village ( Estonian küla ) on the largest Estonian island of Saaremaa . It belongs to the rural municipality Saaremaa (until 2017: rural municipality Lääne-Saare ) in the Saare district . Laheküla is not to be confused with Allikalahe and Tirbi , which are also on the island of Saaremaa and were called Laheküla until 2017, as well as Laheküla , which has been part of Maasi since then .

Population and location

The village has 206 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2016). Its area is 12.81 km².

The place is located on the western outskirts of the island's capital Kuressaare .

Oak forest

Laheküla is best known for the 55 hectare oak forest of Loode (Loode tammik) . It has been under state protection since 1955. The oldest trees are up to 500 years old. Fourteen different species of orchid can also be found in the area .

In 2003 an ornithological observation tower was built.
