description

The place was first mentioned in 1434 under the name Ruttel . Today the village has 28 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2011). It is 40 kilometers northeast of the island's capital Kuressaare .

At the beginning of the 1960s, archaeologists discovered the remains of a fortified settlement near Ridala. It was probably destroyed in an enemy attack and fire in the 8th or 7th century BC. At that time it was surrounded on three sides by the sea.
