Salme is a village ( Estonian alevik ) in the rural municipality of Saaremaa in Saare County on the largest Estonian island of Saaremaa . Until 2017, it was the capital of a rural community of the same name .

Population and location

The place has 469 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2011). It is located sixteen kilometers southwest of the island's capital Kuressaare on the west coast of the Sõrve peninsula .

history

One of the first singing festivals in what is now Estonia took place near Salme on May 21, 1863 . It was created on the initiative of the pastor of Anseküla at the time , Martin Körber (1817–1893).

The place was almost completely destroyed during the Second World War . It got its current appearance in the 1960s as the center of a collective farm .

Archaeological finds

As of 2008, the remains of a ship burial presumably from the Venetian Age were found near Salme , which are currently being archaeologically examined.
