Soela is a village ( Estonian küla ) on the largest Estonian island of Saaremaa . It belongs to the rural community Saaremaa (until 2017: rural community Leisi ) in the Saare district .

Population and location

The village has nineteen inhabitants (as of December 31, 2011). It is located on the northeast coast of the Pammana peninsula (Pammana poolsaar) . From the beach there is a wide view over the Baltic Sea .

The place houses a small boat harbor.

etymology

The name of the place is probably derived from the Low German word Sel for seal .

Soela also gave its name to Soela väin (German Sele-Sund ), the strait between the two largest Estonian islands Saaremaa and Hiiumaa .

Medieval fortification

Traces of a medieval fortification have been found near Soela. Historians suspect that it is a Danish castle that King Waldemar had built. It was destroyed in 1222.
