Tõnija (German Tönia ) is a village ( Estonian küla ) on the largest Estonian island Saaremaa . It belongs to the rural community Saaremaa (until 2017: rural community Valjala ) in the Saare district .

Population and location

The village has 43 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2011). It is located 30 kilometers northeast of the island's capital Kuressaare .

history

The place was first mentioned in 1453 under the name Toneyegell . The Wacke and the village of Tonniel and Tonnigel are documented for 1592 .

To the east of the village center, archaeologists have found the largest prehistoric settlement to date on the island of Saaremaa.
