Muratsi

Muratsi (German Murratz ) is a village ( Estonian küla ) on the largest Estonian island Saaremaa . It belongs to the rural municipality Saaremaa (until 2017: rural municipality Lääne-Saare ) in the Saare district .
Population and location
The village has 245 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2016). Its area is 16.36 km². The island of Väike-Tulpe also belongs to the area of the village .
The place is five kilometers southeast of the island's capital Kuressaare directly on the Baltic Sea . It was first mentioned in 1560 under the name Murras . The place now houses a small port.
Well
At the beginning of the 17th century, the Murratz farm emerged from various fiefs . From 1707 to 1877 it was owned by the noble Baltic German family Güldenstubbe . The property then passed to the Buxhoevden family .
The manor's small, single-storey mansion was probably built at the beginning of the 19th century. With the Soviet occupation of Estonia , it was used by the Red Army until the 1960s . Then it fell into disrepair. Today only ruins remain.
Personalities
The Baltic German military Arthur von Buxhoeveden (1882–1964) was born in Muratsi . He moved to Germany in 1939.
