In the railway accident in Hitrino (in other sources: "Chitrino"), Bulgaria , on December 10, 2016 tank wagons with liquefied gas derailed while passing through Hitrino station , Bulgaria, and exploded . Seven people died.

Starting position

On the Varna – Ruse railway line , a freight train from the Bulmarket railway company was traveling from Burgas to Ruse , which consisted of 24 tank cars loaded with liquefied gas and other flammable liquids. He was pulled by two electric locomotives. Bulmarket uses second-hand locomotives for the traction of its trains : the leading locomotive was the 86.003 , a former Danish locomotive, the second locomotive was the 87.025, a former Class 87 from British Rail . In the entrance area of ​​the station there was a maximum speed of 40 km / h.

the accident

At around 5:37 a.m., the train entered the station at 78 km / h. The last seven wagons derailed for an unexplained cause. The last two wagons knocked down overhead line masts , caught fire and exploded. As a result, among other things, the reception building , the municipal office and the police station, a total of 50 buildings within a radius of 200 meters, were damaged, at least one collapsed.

consequences

Seven people died, 29 were seriously injured and 23 were slightly injured. The three drivers - two in the first, one in the second locomotive - survived. 50 buildings were damaged or even destroyed. 150 firefighters were on duty. Half of the 800 inhabitants of the village were evacuated. The prosecution is investigating the two engine drivers who were in the leading engine (the third engine driver was in the rear engine).
