The DSB EA series is a series of 22 electric locomotives that Danske Statsbaner procured in two series in connection with the electrification of the Danish main lines. Locomotives 3001 to 3010 were delivered between 1984 and 1986, followed by 3011 to 3022 between 1992 and 1993.

technology

The locomotives are equipped with three-phase asynchronous motors, after the standard for electric and diesel-electric locomotives that was valid until the time of procurement had been DC motors . The changeover was possible because a reliable control system had been developed for AC motors and DC motors could not produce the same performance as three-phase motors.

The time multiplex push-pull train control (ZWS) was not installed on delivery. However, this is necessary so that the EA locomotives can be used with the double-decker cars of the DSB, which were carried by the ME series until 2015 . Equipping the series with the ZWS caused a number of technical problems. After this solution, the EA 3007 was the first locomotive to be used in scheduled operation with double-decker trains in February 2015 .

history

In the mid-1970s, DSB commissioned several APO groups (Arbejds Projekt Organization) to develop a new concept for future deliveries of rail vehicles. Four groups were set up, each responsible for diesel traction (from which the ME was developed), express train (which led to two prototypes, which however were unsuccessful, but were the prerequisite for the IC 3 ), S-Bahn (which led to two Prototypes, none of which were successful, but served as inspiration for the third generation of S-Bahn trains) and electric traction , which the EA series developed.

The group for electric traction found a suitable locomotive in the German DB class 120 that could serve as a technical basis. The only changes that were made to the German model were the design of the locomotive body, which was coordinated closely with the other working groups, as well as the adaptations to the Danish overhead line network, which runs on 25 kV alternating current with a frequency of 50 Hz. is operated, compared to the German network with 15 kV alternating current with a frequency of 16 2/3 Hz.

The first two locomotives, 3001 and 3002, were delivered by Henschel in 1984 and supplemented by the 3003 to 3010 series from Scandia in 1985/86 . Between 1992 and 1993 the same manufacturer supplied the twelve locomotives 3011 to 3022.

This made the EA the first Danish electric multi-purpose locomotive. The range of services envisages the transport of 1,100 tons at 120 km / h on the level route and freight trains with 1,400 tons on gradients of 15.6 per mille. The first use was made by EA 3001 on March 20, 1986 on the Kystbane.

RDK EA

In June 2001, DSB Gods was sold to Railion , which was controlled by Deutsche Bahn , and changed its name to Railion Danmark . Ten of the EA series locomotives (EA 3011-3019 and 3021) previously owned by DSB were passed on to the new company. Despite the change of ownership, the locomotives retained their color scheme, their class designation, their number and their name.

Bulmarket 86

In January 2007 DSB sold the six EA locomotives 3002, 3003, 3005, 3006, 3008 and 3009 to the Bulgarian railway company Bulmarket . They were examined in Denmark in 2007 and 2008 and then transported to Bulgaria. There they were given the UIC numbers 91 52 20 86 00x-y.

The ten locomotives handed over to Railion Danmark went to various sister companies in the early 2010s. Among them was Logistic Services Danubius (UIC numbers LSD 91 53 0-465 00x-y).

The locomotives were passed on to DB Schenker Rail Bulgaria to Bulgaria at unspecified times (UIC numbers 91 52 31 86 0xx-y).

Overview

All locomotives are named after scientists and railroad workers. In addition, the sold locomotives are listed with the ownership companies:

commitment

At the beginning of the EA series passenger trains were transferred to Zealand . The locomotives were put into operation from 1986 on the Kystbane between Copenhagen and Helsingør and between 1987 and 1989 on the København – Korsør railway line called Vestbanen . On the Storebæltsforbindelsen they were used from the opening in 1997 for freight train operations to Funen and Jutland until they were replaced in 2000 by the newly delivered locomotives of the EG series. On this relation the passenger train traffic was carried out with multiple units of the series ER .

When new electric multiple units came into use in Denmark, operations with the EA series were reduced to a few locomotives.

The six EA in operation at DSB (3001, 3004, 3007, 3010, 3020 and 3022) were covered with the dark blue film in October 2006 as part of the company's new design profile.

DSB then used them for use with the night trains between the Danish border near Padborg and Copenhagen Central Station, as well as for some regional trains on Zealand. These missions required only a few locomotives. Therefore, four locomotives were parked in Centralværkstedet København . Most recently they only hauled the international night train between Copenhagen and Padborg until 2014 and were converted this year so that they have been able to transport double-decker trains between Østerport and Ringsted / Slagelse since 2015 .
