Georg Frederik Ursin (born June 22, 1797 in Copenhagen ; † December 4, 1849 there ) was a Danish mathematician .

Life

His father's last name was Kruger, and his approved family name was that of his mother. He trained as a land surveyor and visited the metropolitan cities in Copenhagen, where he won a mathematics award and passed his exam.

In 1818 he studied astronomy with Carl Friedrich Gauß in Göttingen. From 1819 to 1829 he was an observer at the Copenhagen observatory . In 1827 he became professor of mathematics at the Academy of Fine Arts . From 1829 to 1832 he was a teacher of mechanical engineering and technology at the polytechnic school . In 1849 he was the administrator of Charlottenborg Palace .

In 1823 he married Helene Elisabeth de Thurah (1797–1876).

He published elementary mathematics textbooks, including on arithmetic and descriptive geometry , which were aimed primarily at craftsmen, artists and merchants, nautical almanacs and a collection of popular scientific essays on astronomy (1838). From 1826 he published Denmark's first polytechnical magazine, which appeared for 16 years. He also wrote on technical subjects in magazines such as Borgervennen , which he co-edited.

The DSB EA 3020 locomotive was named after him.

In 1829 he became a member of the Royal Danish Academy of Sciences .
