Emil Christian Hansen (born May 8, 1842 in Ribe ; † August 27, 1909 in Copenhagen ) was a Danish botanist with a focus on mycology and plant physiology .

Life

He financed his studies in natural sciences by writing short stories.

Only later did he deal with microbiological questions of yeast cultivation . As an employee of the Carlsberg Laboratories in Copenhagen , he discovered that the term yeast must be understood to mean various fungal organisms and that the individual strains can be cultivated in pure form. He isolated individual cells and propagated these droplet cultures in standardized nutrient solutions by sprouting into pitching yeasts. The yeast described by him for the first time in 1883 became known under the name Saccharomyces carlsbergensis . As part of this research, he also dealt with acetic acid bacteria (then counted among the fungi as "fissure fungi") and in 1879 was the first to describe the species known today as Acetobacter pasteurianus . In 1887 he was elected a member of the Leopoldina .

Act

In the years that followed, Hansen became even better known and one of the pioneers in the dairy industry until the end of his life. His second focus was the world's first industrial production of perfectly hygienic standardized animal rennet varieties for cheese production. Following a publication by Rudolf Schatzmann from Thurgau , he developed this method and presented his products to the public at the dairy exhibition in Gdańsk.

The genus Hansenula , today classified under Pichia , was named after him. Its botanical abbreviation is ECHansen .
