Rudolf Schatzmann

Rudolf Schatzmann (born June 5, 1822 in Saanen , † June 15, 1886 in Lausanne ) was a Swiss Reformed clergyman , farmer and agricultural functionary . He is considered a reformer in the dairy industry.

Life

Schatzmann was the son of a pastor . He attended schools in Bern and then studied theology at the University of Bern from 1841 to 1845 . During this time he became a member of the Zofingia student union and is said to have been an excellent gymnast, swimmer and rider. While studying theology, he made friends with Karl Schenk . In 1846 he became vicar in Bremgarten near Bern .

Schatzmann followed a call to Guttannen as a preacher in 1847 . There he became active in agriculture for the first time. In 1850 he got a job in Frutigen , where he was able to expand his farm. In 1859 he moved to Vechigen over. In the following years he expanded his involvement in the Ökonomische und Gemeinnützige Gesellschaft Bern (OGG) and in 1863 became a co-founder and vice-president of the Swiss Alpine Association . In 1866 he took over the office of president of the association. From 1862 to 1865 he was also the editor of the Bernische Blätter for agriculture .

Schatzmann resigned from church service in 1865 and was then director of the agricultural school in Kreuzlingen from 1865 to 1869 and, after its closure, director of the teachers' college in Chur from 1869 to 1872 . As early as 1866 he was director of the first general Swiss dairy exhibition in Bern, and from 1870 he held pioneering agricultural training courses in Frauenfeld for the future of alpine farming. He became a reformer of the alpine and dairy farming.

Schatzmann founded the first milk testing station in Switzerland in Thun in 1872 and became its director. In 1875 this institution was moved to Lausanne. He later retired from the director's office. His sphere of activity extended beyond Switzerland. He visited other European countries , also on behalf of the Federal Council , in order to cultivate exchanges in the field of dairy farming and its development. For example, the Dane Emil Christian Hansen developed new methods of cheese production after Schatzmann's work.
