Kailuka is a village ( Estonian küla ) on the largest Estonian island of Saaremaa . It belongs to the rural community Saaremaa (until 2017: rural community Pihtla ) in the Saare district .

History, population and location

The village was first mentioned in 1520 under the name Kauszkulle . At that time it was inhabited by Swedes.

The village has 64 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2011). It is located near the east coast of the Vätta peninsula ( Vätta poolsaar ) on the Baltic Sea bay Sutu ( Sutu laht ). The distance to the island's capital Kuressaare is twelve kilometers.

To the east of the village is a former fishing port, which was important for the local fish combine during the time of the Estonian SSR .
