Triigi (German Feckerort ) is a village ( Estonian küla ) on the largest Estonian island Saaremaa . It belongs to the rural community Saaremaa (until 2017: rural community Leisi ) in the Saare district .

Population and location

The village has 28 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2011). It is located on the peninsula of the same name (Triigi poolsaar) on the north coast of Saaremaa Island. The distance to the island's capital Kuressaare is forty kilometers.

history

The place was first mentioned in 1716 under the name Wackerort .

Among other things, it is known for a small estate that was owned by the von Rehekampff family and belonged to the noble Baltic German family Poll in the 19th century . Constance Amalie von Poll (née Vietinghoff-Scheel; 1829-1860) was buried in the former cemetery. Today only the overgrown foundation walls of the former burial chapel of the Poll family can be seen.

port

Triigi is home to a small port. From there ferries run regularly across the Soela Sound (Soela väin) to the port of Sõru on the neighboring island of Hiiumaa to the north .

Vigala Sass

Triigi is closely associated with the Estonian “folk healer” Vigala Sass (1941–2015), who ran an alternative farm in Triigi until his death.
